We had stealthed our way deep into the firenewt-controlled dwarven forge. But when the party stumbles into a makeshift stables for the firenewts’ dinosaur mounts, all hell breaks loose.

The party had successfully, and quietly, taken out their first firenewt guard in the tunnels near the smelter, earning them all a point of inspiration. Gillian, wearing a magical disguise of the slain firenewt thanks to her Mantle of Whispers, directed the nearest guards to head into the tunnel to the west, avoiding the large, firenewt-filled smelter room.

Gillian, Khaless, and Mannix headed into the tunnel to try and take them out. They ran into a slight problem: the tunnel to the west lead into the mine cart bay, which the firenewts used as a stable area for their Giant Strider mounts. At least half a dozen of the beasts were tethered here, along with a handful of firenewts.

The PCs were undeterred, and Gillian decided to get the party started by casting Hypnotic Pattern. The spell was very effective, locking down six of the eight enemies in the area. At the same time Mannix cast a Silent Image of a dwarf wizard in the far corner, allowing Gillian and Khaless to sneak up and unleash a flurry of attacks with a surprise round.

But then it was time to roll for initiative.

The party was split, and George spent his first turn teleporting to the others with his Cape of the Mountebank. The fighting was fierce and painful in the west caves, with the party discovering that the striders were capable of unleashing fireballs out of their mouths, and even healing themselves from it in the process. A few of the firenewts were capable of casting fiery spells, which they gleefully unleashed on the party.

Therin had problems of his own back in the eastern tunnel, with their albino dwarf allies rushing into the smelter area as the firenewts began to mobilize. He cast his Wall of Thorns from his staff, blocking off access from the smelter to the stables to the north. That effectively funneled all of the firenewts directly into him and the dwarves, however.

Therin used Conjure Animals to summon an Allosaurus, then Wild Shaped into an Allosaurus. The firenewts charged with glowing red hot swords from the forge (I gave them all the Heat Metal spell effect on their weapons), while their warlocks threw down Flaming Spheres and Scorching Rays.

The summoned dinosaur would go down to a frightening series of attacks, including two crits. Therin-saurus doesn’t look much better, and began calling out to the others as more and more firenewts poured out of the forge. The rest of the party is still locked in a struggle with the striders. Things are looking bleak; we’ll see if the party perseveres next week.
