Previously on War for the Lost Plane

Starring:
Kaelan, level 13 tiefling Monster Slayer Ranger/Fiend Warlock
Scarlet, level 13 human Oath of Devotion Paladin
Gillian, level 13 triton Champion Fighter/College of Lore Bard
Kethra, level 13 half-elf Assassin Rogue
TIM, level 13 warforged War Domain Cleric

Descending another staircase, we saw a pair of gigantic lion-like creatures with silver horns, radiating with celestial energy, a deva held a spectral axe nearby. “Come, children of another place, bow your heads before me, I wish your deaths to be as merciful and painless as possible.”

“Thanks!” said TIM.

“That’s bullshit,” I muttered. Turning to Scarlet I whispered, “How pissed would you be if I rained hellfire on these creatures?”

Naturally, Scarlet looked taken aback. “No! We do not rain hellfire on angelic beings. I’m just going to go talk to them-“

She strode forward. Without a word, Kethra darted out and tripped her, sending the heavily armored paladin crashing to the floor.

I begin harnessing the demonic energy in my body, my hands glowing hot as a ball of fire begins to form. My demonic heritage becomes unmistakable, skin reddening, horns itching, eyes glowing.

To their credit, my newfound party members only nod in affirmation as I hurl a fireball into the celestial creatures.

The fire explodes into the creatures, flames licking at their bodies. “Perhaps not as innocent as I imagined. No mercy for you then.”

After traversing down electrified hallways, the party reunited in a southern room. The sole occupant was another bellboy. Nearby a tree grew out of a bed of sand. Oddly the sand was undulating to the sound of the bellboy’s ringing.

We knew we had to silence the bellboy in order to get the clue on how to proceed further down the tower. Once again Kethra used her superior dexterity to nab all the clappers. The bellboy became inanimate, and the following message appeared:

Southeast and Southwest
They Like to Play Games
And Love to Win

We’d spotted doors leading both west and east. We split the party to investigate, with Gillian and Kethra heading west and the rest east. The rooms were the exact same, empty save for the trees and the oddly reactive sand.

The sand liked music, and enjoyed dancing when TIM dove in for a closer look. We started a game of Tic Tac Toe by drawing on the sand, though TIM ended up winning. On the other side, Gillian allowed the sand to win their game, and a hidden staircase was revealed.

We headed down, emerging into a hallway with an open doorway into a much larger room. The room held a pair of angelic lion creatures with large curved horns, and another deva. The lions called out for us to step forward and accept a quick, merciful death.

We weren’t exactly having that, though Kethra had to literally trip Scarlet to keep from charging in and trying to once again reason with the celestial beings. Kaelan charged up a Fireball blast, and with confirmation from his teammates, hurled it into the crowd. Roll for initiative!

We rolled incredibly well for initiative. Gillian shut down the lion creatures (Felidars from Gulidmaster’s Guide to Ravnica) with Hypnotic Pattern, and TIM followed up with a 7th level Divine Word. Two failed saves later, and the Felidars popped out of our existence. Hot damn!

With only the deva left we could focus all of our attacks, though it possessed a nifty spectral axe that could pass through creatures and attack at range for a hefty amount of damage.

Halfway through the deva fight, a horned devil emerged from the staircase behind us, apparently the last survivor of the large-scale battle we had fled two sessions ago. It charged at Kaelan and Kethra. Thankfully the deva was swiftly dispatched, and the others were able to turn around and help destroy the devil.

We’re not quite out of the mysterious Verdant Tower yet, as another bellboy can be heard ringing in the distance.

We’re off next week – see you on October 2!
