As we climb the stone steps we could hear a desperate voice on the wind – “Free me!”

At the top lie a gigantic green dragon – the same we had seen fly over us earlier. A longsword is firmly lodged in its head, purple gems along its blade and hilt glowing softly.

The dragon is sleeping, but before I can signal to Scarlet, the paladin calls out, “Hello? Where are you?”

The whispery voice cuts out, along with the soft snoring of the monstrous beast.

Moments later the dragon leaps up and crashes down beside us, claws digging into the crumbling stone structure. It lowers its gigantic head, its mouth revealing sharp teeth the size of longswords. My hands fly to my crossbows even as my stomach drops out.

The dragon stares intently at Scarlet and says, “Hello darling, how are you?”

After clearing the demons in the ice cave to the north, the next step to helping Marina was tracking down the were-orcs to the south.

As we traveled south we saw more of the ancient ruins. An entire city being reclaimed by Marina’s forest. In alcoves we discovered cleanly picked bones and pieces of humanoid statues that appeared to have been petrified, and destroyed. Marina’s work?

Outside of an intact building, some vines cryptically spelled out an alarming phrase: FREE ME. The vines led to the east. Kethra ignored them, unable to leave any door unopened. Kaelan’s imp patron/familiar saw a trio of sleeping bears in a nearby cave, with a weapon rack nearby. Werebears?

Ironically we ended up ignoring the bears for now. Kethra went inside the building, while Scarlet was lured by the message and her desire to help whomever was in trouble. Not knowing what lie ahead, TIM followed Kethra while Kaelan followed Scarlet.

The building was large, but entirely empty. Rooms within rooms revealed bathrooms and closets. Kethra pushed some buttons on an altar, revealing a spell scroll within. Eventually they exited the building, and Kethra used her incredible stealth skills to steal the weapons from the werebears (we’re still assuming they were werebears, bears don’t usually stock weapons), and ditch them in the nearby forest.

Meanwhile, Scarlet and Kaelan followed the vines to the east, climbing a set of stone stairs to find a gigantic, slumbering green dragon. The dragon had a longsword lodged in its head, gems faintly glowing in its pommel. The wind seemed to whisper “FREE ME,” and that’s when Scarlet loudly asked who was talking.

Moments later the dragon crashed down next to us, opened its mouth… and cordially introduced himself as Tellurai. Scarlet didn’t miss a beat, striking up a genial conversation with the friendly, talkative dragon, especially when she mentioned that we were on official business from Marina.

Green dragons usually aren’t that sociable, and he had a weirdly elegant voice. We noticed something during the conversation, the dragon’s mouth didn’t quite match its voice, and the sword’s gems would glow while it spoke. Kaelan cast Detect Thoughts using his Legacy of Dis, and found a stunted but raging voice within the dragon’s mind.

Our hypothesis – we were actually speaking to the sword, which had supplanted the dragon’s consciousness. When Scarlet tried to bring up the sword, Tellurai grew frighteningly defensive.

Styx told Kethra and TIM about the dragon situation, and they hurried over. Kaelan was excited about extracting the sword and freeing the dragon, hopefully gaining both a magic sword and an grateful dragon in the process. TIM conferred with the vengeful spirit Crissann, who teased that the dragon-sword was Marina’s not-so-secret weapon. If we wanted to help Crissann and defeat Marina, we needed to remove that sword.

Kethra didn’t need much convincing after that. While Scarlet continued to engage in a cheery conversation, Kethra stealthy climbed the rampart. The plan was to leap on top of the dragon’s head, and the same time, Kaelan would teleport there, and the two would work together to pull the sword out.

Unfortunately full grown dragons are quite perceptive. Kethra took a tentative step onto the dragon, and it immediately reared up, shouting about betrayal. Kethra hung onto to its back, our hands flying to our weapons.. Next week: we roll for initiative!
